Surface
Causes
Canker sore causes are
varied if you only look at surface and topical reasons; radiation,
chemotherapy, dental visits, acidic foods such as lemons, oranges,
and tomatoes.
Some wonder if it's viruses or
bacteria, maybe even transmitted sexually.
It could be any of those things.
However, you still have to have an emotional basis for the mouth
ulcer to form.
Emotional Causes
Those that study the
"mind-body-connection" and
holistic
alternative medicine demonstrate that, as with any physical
symptom, what is at the basis for the cause of the canker sores are negative emotions.
Examples of suspected emotions that
could cause mouth ulcers such as herpes simplex, fever blisters,
cold sores, and canker sores may be emotional triggers such as
blame, fear, anger, overwhelm, resentment, shock, guilt, shame and
lack of inner peace.

Canker Sores (Aphthous Ulcers)
Canker
sores, not to be mixed up with cold sores (which is a common
misconception), are small white ulcers that develop on the inside of the
mouth on the tongue, lips, gums, or the inside of the cheeks. Unlike cold
sores, which are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1, a canker sore
is actually an inflammation. The most common cause of such sores is stress
and allergies. It can also occur as a result of over acidity, poor dental
hygiene, vitamin/mineral deficiencies, an immune response to bacteria in
the mouth, mistakenly biting one’s own cheek, and irritations from dental
work. Frequent sores have also been associated with Crohn’s disease.
The canker sores can last anywhere from 4-25 days, thus, following some
suggested guidelines may shrink the length of their unwelcomed visit. In
terms of supplements, it is a good idea to take high quality Acidophilus.
Vitamin C which fights infections and boosts the immunity is also
suggested. Herbal formulas containing capsicum, alfalfa, calendula,
comfrey, peppermint and garlic can also speed up healing time. The
homeopathic remedies Borax, Echinacea, and Belladonna have also been
helpful in eliminating canker sores.
As far as diet goes, you will want to stay away from sugars, coffee, meat,
citrus fruits, chewing gum, and processed foods. You should eat plenty of
salad and include raw onions in the diet as much as possible. The sulfur
found in the onions is excellent for healing. Include plenty of yogurt,
cottage cheese, buttermilk, and kefir in your diet as well. It is
important to change your tooth brush once a month to reduce the risk of
further sores. If you have a canker sore that does not heal after 25 days,
you should consult your doctor.

Answer and Questions on Canker
Sore Causes:
Okay. First off, I am VERY prone to canker sores. I've been getting them for about 5 years. I get these little monsters every month. NOW, I want to know the truth. I went to doctors and researched about this for a long time. BUT I'm still confused. I know and understand there's no cure or precise cause for these things. But I want to clarify one thing: Are canker sores CAUSED by HSV virus? I see websites and doctors say both YES and NO. One website (sorry I can't source) says that "many say canker sores and cold sores are same as oral herpes (HSV virus). It is NOT true. Canker sores only appears inside the mouth." blah blah blah. And this was updated pretty recent. But many other people do say that it is caused by HSV. PLEASE let me know. And possibly treament for it to heal faster. (I know there are many guidlines but they never work; just throwing it out there to see some miracles). **People who have canker sores like me understand the pain and sorrow. It sucks. Please let me know. pleasepleaseplase Please be mature and don't add comment if you don't know what you're talking about. Like the first guy who posted his stupid idiotic answer.
I have braces, and the parts where the rubber bands hook on constantly give me terrible canker sores... After a while they heal up and dont hurt anymore, but I'll still have like inch + long gashes in my mouth that dont heal for a while? Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it? Thanks.
I THOUGHT it was a cold sore cause i shared an otterpop with this guy n we were justt talkinqq n he was sayinq he thinks his qf qave his a cold sore. But i looked it up & im 90% sure its a canker sore, cause it looks like a white flat circle, with a prominent red around it, and the red looks sliqhtly inflamed. &&i qott it two days after i bit my lip really bad by accident.
I think I have a canker sore on the inside of my cheek , it hurts to swallow and my ear hurts aand my cheek is puffy
my friend is worried she's going to die from canker sores cause someone told her she might. she has them everywhere in her mouth and on her tongue and she's worried she's going to die, everytime I try to tell her no she won't listen. this isn't true is it? is it normal to have so many? expecally on the tongue?
OK here is the deal I have had tons of canker sores in my life no big deal they go away on their own. But now I have a sore on the inside of my gums back where my wisdom teeth were they have been gone for a few years and the gums in that area are swollen and I have what looks like a small cut with a canker sore over it but it like a line or scratch not round. Can a canker sore cause the gums to swell, my left gland in under my throat is swollen and it hurts like hell to eat or drink most of the time? Is this just a canker sore or is it something else? P.S. I don't wear braces or dentures, don't chew tobacco or drink alcohol in excess people have asked me this already as possible causes.
First off I can rule out any STD. I am happily married. :) Okay.. its a painful bump on my saliva gland (Cheek). I though it might have been a canker sore, cause of the pain, but my husband said its on the gland... So if this is the case, do I need to see a doctor? Will it go away on its own, or are there any home remedies? Thanks in advance.
Okay so i heard in health class that if u give head while u have a cold sore u can give ur partner herpes. So wat about canker sores does this also apply?
ok well i have had this soreness in the roof of my mouth on one side for about 3 days now. i think its a canker sore cause its all red and its so painful. ive used oraljel for 2 days but its not doing anything. i cant eat or anything its really annoying. how can i make it heal?
I have this clear/white bubble on my inside lower lip. And i don't think it's a canker sore cause I've had canker sores and they don't look like this. I'm afraid it might be something more please help me
Do canker sores cause the surrounding area to be very sore and painful? Such as the jaws and cheeks?? and lymph nodes?? I have a very small one at the base of my gums and my jaw and cheek on that side of my mouth is so sore..
i know im about to get a canker sore cause i can feel it forming on my lip, and its in a bad spot, like right up in front. i get them alot and i deal with them but i dont want this one. how can i make it so it doesnt develop into a full blown canker sore?? btw, its a canker sore, NOT a cold sore. there is a difference, dont try and tell me how to get rid of cold sores. thank you, your responces are much appreciated.
recently i had a huge canker sore on the very bottom of my left cheek and as soon as it appeared my top 2nd to last molar started to hurt horribly. i went to the dentist and he recomended i see a dental surgeon (apt is not for another 2 weeks) (the tooth hurting had a root canal done on it years ago) but now my canker sore is almost gone and the tooth doesnt hurt anymore...is it possible that the canker sore caused this toothache? also at the dentist he gave me some novacaine to dig around with the drill, i couldnt feel the drill but the tooth ache was still there, it was so weird. so he gave me some 5/500 vicodin and it didnt do anything : ( yea... vicodin doesnt work so you suggest naproxen? over the counter drugs? as if i havent tried those.... no they are complete placebos to me. thats y my dr gave me prescription pain killers!
I think what I have is a canker sore and I got it on the inside of my bottom lip. It started today as a bump and I kept chewing on it (I know, stupid of me) and I guess it got irritated. It started to get a little swollen on the outside of my mouth like not swollen swollen but like a soft little bump corresponding to where the canker sore is in my mouth. I don't believe it was there earlier. I'm afraid that this might not be a canker sore , cause no website says that this is normal. I keep reading things on like oral cancer and tumors in my mouth, I'm kind of scared. Can someone please help? Thanks!
